What to say in a daily standup: a 60-second frame for developers
A Yesterday / Today / Blocker frame with ready-made phrases so you can give your standup update in English without reading from notes.
The daily standup is the shortest meeting you have, and the one you repeat most often. If you can give a confident 60-second update, you get five real speaking practices every week.
The three-part frame
- Yesterday: what you did. “Yesterday I worked on the payment retry logic.”
- Today: what you’ll do. “Today I’m going to finish the API integration.”
- Blocker: what’s stopping you and who can help. “I’m blocked on the staging environment. I’ll need some help from the DevOps team.”
No blockers? Just say: “No blockers on my side.”
How not to freeze
- Prepare three sentences right before the meeting. They don’t need to be perfect, just follow the frame.
- Learn whole chunks, not single words. “Took longer than expected” works for any task that slipped.
- Say it out loud three times before the call, a little faster each time (a short version of the 4/3/2 technique).
